Plantago – Plantain leaf

The use of plantain leaves in herbal medicine has a long tradition. In Poland, the plantain is very well known and occurs widely across the country. Plantain leaf through a remarkable anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, is used to treat burns, bruises, slow-healing wounds, inflammatory genital or oral mucosa. Was also used as an antidote for poisoning. Thanks to the active substances which inhibit the secretion of mucus often it is used in the treatment of upper respiratory catarrh, sinusitis, and protects the gastrointestinal tract. Also heals gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers. Plantain contains:

  • iridoids (an anti-inflammatory and analgesic),
  • flavonoids (antioxidants),
  • tannins (acting antiseptic),
  • organic acids,
  • mucilage.
