Calamus rhizome (root)

Calamus root, commonly known as sweet flag, has been used by various cultures since ancient times, traditionally calamus was used for its effects on the digestive system and the lungs. Calamus has been used as an aphrodisiac in ancient Egypt and in India, for more than 2,500 years.

Calamus is used for gastrointestinal (GI) problems including ulcers, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), intestinal gas (flatulence), upset stomach and loss of appetite (anorexia). Calamus is also used as a calming medicine (sedative), to induce sweating, and to treat rheumatoid arthritis and stroke. The root is also chewed to help toothache and to help stop smoking. Many experimental studies have established that one of the medical virtues of calamus is its ability to reduce spasms.
